Description

How do art, activism, and women's empowerment connect? Join us to explore these themes at a special workshop and exhibit tour with the Women's Museum of California for WE members, volunteers, supporters, and friends. At our last partner presentation, we highlighted WE partner, Multicolores in Guatemala, and their work empowering female Maya artisans through traditional embroidery skills and design training, economic and leadership opportunities, and more. (You can view the presentation here.) Along with Multicolores, Katie Ruiz from the Women's Museum presented on their Crafting Feminism exhibit.

About "Crafting Feminism: Textiles of the Women's Movement" and this workshop:
Textiles connect women throughout time. They are skills passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter, within the privacy of the home. And, throughout history, women have created textiles to help promote women's rights, and whether it be sashes, banners, hats or pants, textiles have played a vital role for women fighting for equality. By celebrating craftwork as a tool of artistic and political expression, and not only as private acts of women’s labor, we see how impactful women have been in our society.

This workshop will highlight the progress of the women’s movement throughout the 20th and 21st centuries through the textiles women created. By engaging in the exhibit and related activities, participants will be inspired to make positive change in their communities.

Please note: This workshop will take place at the WMC Education Center (their Southeast San Diego Center), located at: 404 Euclid Ave, San Diego, CA 92114.
